The myth of the graphical browser is that it can be used universally. This browser and no other brings the Web home to you as it's meant to be. But the Web has gotten big and meets a variety of needs - from finding the departure times of trains to looking up academic papers and playing games. And it's beginning to dawn on the everyday user that the existence of a universal browser that communicates all these experiences in the best manner possible is a myth.

>>> Ascott, Roy "L'esthétique de la cyberculture" 1997

http://panoramix.univ-paris1.fr/UFR04/rhizome/revues/atopie/atopie2.htm

http://www.labart.univ-paris8.fr/chantier/nouv/anne-gaelle/art-num-JPB.html

>>> Slayton, Joel "Re=purpose of Information : Art as Network"1998

http://switch.sjsu.edu/web/v4n2/joel/index.html

This paper presents an analytic perspective on the nature of Art as Network. The network (internet and intranets) is described as having properties of a nonlinear complex system, which serve to enable a network semiotic enabled by entailment meshwork. The network semiotic includes the characteristics of hierarchical structure, tendency towards self-organization and chaotic attractors, resulting in the emergence of self-similar alternates which function as dissimulators of interaction and immediacy. Art as Network is an exploration of the pandemonium of agencies forming entailment meshwork.

Art as Network is intended as a subject of discourse, not declaration. Certainly, I do not suppose that the particular theoretical investigations that I have chosen to discuss herein are the only points where the discourse of Art as Network is possible. My emphasis on complexity and semiotics involving entailment mesh, nonlinear dynamics, self-organization, homogeneity, dissimulation and the notion of alternates, is to establish a framework in which are present domains from which the artist might experiment.

>>> Stalbaum, Brett "Aesthetic conditions in art on the network : beyond representation of the relative speeds of hypertextuall and conceptual implementations" 1998

http://switch.sjsu.edu/web/v4n2/brett/index.html

Depending upon where you stand in relation to the development of net.art, any discussion of its aesthetic qualities may seem either inconsequential (based on the knee-jerk reaction that anything expressed on a computer screen is a priori not art) 2, or inadequate (as expressed in Lialina’s call for a theory of net.art which transcends the history of aesthetics). While far from wanting to impose an "external perspective" that limits our view of net.art, I nevertheless hope to make a case for net.art aesthetics by showing that- 1) there are aesthetic qualities in the presentation of net.art that are in no way divorced from the form simply because it is virtual; 2) while the aesthetic qualities of network based art do indeed share the concerns of traditional aesthetics, these traditional notions (revolving around beauty and taste) 3, are not the most interesting or important concerns for network based art; 3) that net.art has a specific aesthetic quality relative to time which is important to any critical evaluation of it, and; 4) that net based art is primarily suited to a conceptual art practice which traditional aesthetic notions can serve, but not complete.

SWITCH is the new media art journal of the CADRE Laboratory for New Media of the School of Art and Design at San Jose State University. It has been published on the Web since 1995. We are interested in fostering a critical viewpoint on issues and developments in the multiple crossovers between art and technology. Our main focus in on questioning and analyzing as well as reporting and discussing these new art forms as they develop, in hopes of encouraging dialogue and possible collaboration with others who are working and considering similar issues. SWITCH aims to critically evaluate developments in art and technology in order to contribute to the formation of alternative viewpoints with the intention of expanding the arena in which new art and technology emerge.

1998 has been an interesting year for network art. At the beginning of the year, the net.art lists were alive with the controversy surrounding the identity thefts of the likes of Mark Amerika, Peter Weibel, and Timothy Druckrey. That particular performance, still unclaimed by its author[s], conceptually underscored the weaknesses of treating liquid identity and becoming in cyberspace as the ontological foundations for dematerialized network art forms. Most authors, as it turns out, don't want to be unstable identities. Even Deleuze and Guattari put their own names on their books! Related to this problem of liquid identity as art form is the relative dearth of development in another of the often speculated foundations for computer art practice: virtual reality. Simulations of Cartesian space and virtual worlds wherein the artist is conjured as author/storyteller have not progressed significantly; except perhaps in the realm of industrial strength gaming. The ontology and identity of the author, still a contested space, continues to suffer from the received habits of narrative literature.

>>> http://switch.sjsu.edu/web/v3n3/militarytoc.html

In December 1997, a series of simulated postings appeared on several mail lists, (Rhizome, 7-11, nettime ). The writing appeared under the authorship of various art/culture critics such as Mark Amerika, Peter Weibel, and Timothy Druckrey. The posts included correct e-mail addresses, indicating that either the lists had been hacked, or that the source of the simulations came from within those organizations. This event, for a time at least, was the subject of much attention and discussion. Was it a criminal act? Was it naive? Or was it a tactical art performance whose origin was the virtual frontline? (A non-place place where the battle over issues ranging from the ontology of the still pubescent net.art form, to the meaning of the term postmodern, are being contested with the weapons of contemporary communications technology.
